Although it sure took its time to get here, Summer 2020 is finally underway. And, despite the craziness of a global pandemic, I somehow managed to secure myself an internship. Let me assure you, however, it was not easy. When I started applying for internships last spring, I had multiple different options. I was constantly sending out my resume, and I even landed a couple of interviews. Unfortunately, as COVID-19 started making its way through the US, I received multiple emails letting me know that the internship programs I applied to had been canceled. Eventually, I was left with one option: the Irving Archives and Museum.
The Irving Archives and Museum (IAM) is located in a suburb of Dallas and exhibits the history of Irving, Texas, as well as serving as the city’s archive. In addition, the museum has space for temporary/traveling exhibitions, as well as a Smithsonian Spark!Lab, a collection of interactive STEM activities for kids. I was introduced to the director of the museum, Jennifer Landry, by an old boss of mine. Jennifer and I started emailing back in January to talk about the internship application process. Then, when other internship programs were starting to cancel, Jennifer continued to email me, and assured me that we would figure something out so that I could get my credit.
Long story short, I’m starting my internship at IAM tomorrow and I could not be more excited! I had to turn in paperwork to HR last week, and I was able to take a tour of the facility, so I already know my way around a little. Also, Jennifer and I got along great, so I’m looking forward to working with her. Usually I feel nervous before my first day at a new job, but this time I don’t. Maybe it’s because I’ve done a museum internship before, or because I already know the space, or because the museum still isn’t open to the public yet. Whatever the reason, I’ll be walking through the doors confidently tomorrow. I can’t wait to tell you all about it!
